5 Plus

What comes after toys?

What do you do when your child no longer wants toys?

Open the door and go play outside? Make your own comic book? Make a model?

That's what you and I used to do.

And it was fun.

But your child wants something different:

Screens.

Where did it all go wrong?

Computer games are exciting. It feels good when we zap the baddies. But we can get addicted to the thrill. Turn off the screen and reality feels dull.

Who wants to play when they're coming down from a dopamine high?

An organised home is not enough

Organising your home helps. When children know where to find things it makes it easier for them to grab what they need when they have an idea.

But what is that idea? What is it that your child wants to do? If she has abdicated responsibility for her entertainment to outside forces, i.e. Roblox and Netflix, it’s only natural that she feels bored when left to fend for herself.

The trick is to offer something positive in its place, something your child is intrinsically motivated to pursue.

Intrinsic motivation is better than activities

Here we are at the heart of 5 Plus.

Yes, there are activities. But the aim is for your child to find something that she loves, something that she will voluntarily come back to again and again.

It’s not about starting a hobby that lasts for five years. It’s about developing a mind that’s curious enough to want to explore subjects in depth and to pursue lines of inquiry.

The promise

In short, the promise of 5 Plus is not activities, it’s independence.

It’s a child who can make her own fun, who has interests and the intrinsic motivation to pursue them.

Because making your own fun means less screen time and more creativity. Which leads to less screen time…

It’s a virtuous circle.

Down with dopamine!

Meet Alexis

I'm a former Early Years teacher and the founder of One Hundred Toys and 5 Plus. As a father of four, I know how hard it is to find time to create meaningful activities for children.

I love being with my children but I know that it’s good for them to spend time alone, to work things out for themselves. Through 5 Plus I hope I can show you that being alongside your child - in the same room, but without necessarily engaging all the time - is not an abdication of responsibility. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

I also want to empower you to choose - and eventually create - your own activities. In fact, my ultimate goal is to give you the confidence to leave it to your child. Children learn through play, through exploration and discovery. They need self-initiated and self-directed tasks. Our job as parents is to make this possible.

Have I left it too late?

5 Plus was designed to take five years. A childhood's worth of fun to cover all the educational bases.

But you can complete it sooner.

Pick the modules that are most relevant for your child and work through them at your own pace.

Break the cycle of boredom and screen time

When we run out of inspiration, our children demand entertainment. We have good intentions but life gets in the way. It's hard to come up with with a steady stream of new ideas. Our children get bored  - and the screens come out.

But it doesn't have to be this way. The activities in 5 Plus are easy to understand, require little or no set up and can be completed independently.

And, best of all, they are fun.

Where will your child be 5 years from now?

Will they be an independent self starter who makes their own fun?

Will they be ready for their next school?

Join 5 Plus and get five years worth of inspiration and learning.

See you on the inside!

Alexis
